Healthy & Radiant Skin Naturally

By Dr. Michael Morsillo, B.Sc., N.D.

Although skin conditions appear on the surface, they typically reflect our internal total-body health and we need to address them accordingly.  Whether you suffer from acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, or simply red, itchy, chapped, dry, and flaky skin, Newmarket Naturopathic can help.  Listed below are some of the main underlying causes that may need to be addressed for great-looking, healthy skin.

Healthy Diet:

The first and foremost area of concern is a healthy diet. A healthy amount of protein (fish, chicken, turkey, nuts, beans, eggs, protein shakes or bars) is required for the production of collagen and elastin, which helps prevents wrinkly, saggy, thin skin.  Healthy fats (avocado, nuts, seeds, fish, seafood, olive oil, etc.) are important for skin cell health and help decrease inflammation in the skin.  High insulin levels cause inflammation and excess sebum (oil) production, so your diet should not contain simple carbohydrates or high sugar foods.

Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency: Many people with skin conditions have a deficiency in Essential Fatty Acids, most commonly omega-3s.  To improve skin quality you should increase your consumption of cold-water fish (salmon, herring, sardines, and mackerel) or other EFAs that nourish our skin: Hemp Seed Oil helps alleviate psoriasis, eczema, acne and dry skin. Coconut Oil & Grape Seed Oil promotes healthy complexion and have antioxidant properties.

Food Sensitivity Testing:  Improper digestive function and food sensitivities can lead to intestinal inflammation.  In time this chronic inflammatory process sets the stage for acne, eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis, which is why we often recommend food sensitivity blood testing at Newmarket Naturopathic for individuals experiencing skin conditions.  Interestingly, current research on many skin conditions, demonstrate that most people improve when food sensitivities are identified and avoided.

Hormone Imbalances: Hormonal balance plays a crucial role in the look and feel of our skin; unfortunately, these hormones can change dramatically due to aging, stress, and menopause.  Estrogen maintains skin thickness, collagen, elasticity, and moisture. Excess testosterone can cause acne on the face, back or chest. Elevated Cortisol will accelerate the aging process of skin and healthy DHEA levels are needed to improve skin moisture to create smoother, younger looking skin.  At our Newmarket Naturopathic Clinic we will use salivary hormone testing to uncover any imbalances and address them accordingly.

It is also important to talk with your Naturopathic Doctor about natural skin care options. Many topical products contain toxins such as sodium lauryl sulphate, phthalates, parabens, paraffin, acrylamide, formaldehyde, lead, synthetic dyes and fragrances, so please read labels carefully. Fortunately, Nature’s Emporium provides many skin care products that are natural, pure, organic, and amazing for your skin.

The most effective solutions will address the root cause of your skin condition by incorporating dietary changes and supplements that reduce inflammation, improve essential fatty acid profiles, enhance digestive function, and regulate hormone levels.  With the right treatment approach, radiant skin that feels soft and smooth can be yours.
